Photograph
Digital image of b+w photo of the northeast corner of Washington and Newark Sts. with people boarding a bus, Hoboken, 12:05 PM, May 23, 1951. Original print 8" x 10"wide. Photographer not indicated. Reverse has typewritten time, place and date.
The view is looking south on Washington Street to Observer Highway from Newark St. People are not identified. Note the background view of Observer Highway; the elevated tracks and structures for the Public Service Corporation Street Railway streetcar lines are no longer present.
The image is from the papers of the Fred M. DeSapio family; he was Mayor of Hoboken at this time. The significance of the date and time is not indicated. (May 23 was a Wednesday, thus probably not the election day for the 1951 Mayoral election; election days are typically a Tuesday.)
Note the Fabian Theatre marquee to the left. In the background is a building with a Ballantine Beer billboard atop it. This was a Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad train yard storage building.
