Photograph
Digital image of sepia-tone photo of Bernard McFeely, Fred DeSapio, Dominick Policastro and townspeople waiting to board a dayliner for DeSapio Democratic Association outing, Hoboken, no date, ca. 1945-1947. Original print 8" x 10" wide. Photographer not indicated.
Original image from the papers of Fred M. DeSapio. Front has numeral '2' in black ink on print at bottom left corner. Reverse has pencil letters "TR" [indicating 'top right' for position, either in multiple matte for framing - suggested by tape marks on reverse, but no matte burn is evident - or in some un-named publication] and lower on the sheet the numeral '2' done with black grease pencil. Also on reverse, modern holographic ink notation by Dr. Gerard DeSapio: Mayor Bernard McFeely, Fred DeSapio, Domonick (sic) Policastro [Dr. DeSapio identifies him as "Sgt" in another photo from this outing] | Annual boat ride to Rye Beach of Fred DeSapio Democ. Assoc.
McFeely is the man wearing the straw boater and looking at the camera. To his left is DeSapio and it is presumed that Policastro is the man to DeSapio's left. Other people are not identified.
While undated, since McFeely is present and identified as Mayor, this photo must be from 1947 or earlier. DeSapio defeated McFeely in the May 1947 elections.
The view is looking southwest. In the background at the right, behind the marching color guard, is the headhouse for Pier 1. Note the crankshafts sitting outside the doorway. The building at the left is side of the Main Post Office and second building from the left is the Steneck building, 95 River St.
