The daughter of an actress and playwright, Jacobson attended Dartmouth College and the School of Fine Art Institute of Chicago, where she earned an M.F.A. in filmmaking. She has taught filmmaking for many years, most recently at the State University of New York at Purchase. In 1993 her film, "Delivered Vacant," an eight-year chronicle of urban gentrification, was selected as an official entry in the Sundance Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, and the San Francisco Film Festival, where it won a Golden Gate Award. Jacobson has received numerous grants and awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
