[Note: front matter varies from that printed in the invitation.] The Friends are very pleased to invite you to Novel Night, A Literary Dining Event! This special evening, beginning at 8pm on Saturday, October 13, features dinners with literary themes at one of 16 Hoboken homes, followed by coffee and dessert at Amanda's Restaurant (908 Washington St.). Dinners are based on a variety of novels and non-fiction works, with appropriate-and delectable-meals to match. A list of the dinners appears below. Guests indicate their top five dining choices in advance and will be assigned to dinners on a first-come, first-served basis as space permits. (Guests need not read the theme book!) Novel Night tickets are $100 per person. All proceeds will be used for the preservation of invaluable historic materials in the Hoboken Public Library's collection. (Many of these valuable documents are literally falling apart and urgently require preservation and conservation.) A SON OF THE CIRCUS by John Irving: Join us for an exotic evening of bright colors, festive music and the exquisite spice of Indian food as we venture to latter-day Bombay. There will be surprises to delight your senses and remem-ber, hot pink is the new black. 2. A TALE OF TWO CITIES by Charles Dickens: From the vantage point of #2 Constitution Court, this book takes on a new meaning! The skyline of Hoboken and Manhattan are not only on view, but the best of both cities is reflected in the culinary skill of an accomplished hostess. 3. A THOUSAND DAYS IN VENICE by Marlena DeBlasi: This novel, filled with a thousand flavors, smells and sensations, describes the adventures of a young woman who falls in love with Venice and a stranger there. Enjoy the talents of first-generation, Italian-American hosts in a gracious Hoboken home. 4. COMFORT ME WITH APPLES by Ruth Reichl: This memoir by the editor of Gourmet (and former New York Times restaurant critic) includes recipes inspired by her travels in the U.S. and abroad. Enjoy an eclectic menu and a discussion on the association of food to life's passages and milestones. 5. HEAT by Bill Buford: From kitchen slave to cook, New York to Chianti, the author signs on to learn the art of food in Mario Batali's famous Babbo restaurant, followed by apprenticeships with master artisans in Tuscany. A Northern Italian feast awaits you. 6. ISTANBUL by Orham Pamuk: Istanbul or Constantinople, for many still the crossroads of Europe and Asia, has inspired many cultures. A selection of typical Aegean and Medi- terranean dishes will be served. 7. PEDRITO'S WORLD by Arturo Martinez: This is the story of a young boy living in the Rio Grande Valley in 1941. There, tortillas and tamales are made with love and there's always room for one more at the table. Join the author for an authentic culinary visit to his childhood home. 8. TEAM OF RIVALS by Doris Kearns Goodwin: Celebrate this outstanding study of Abraham Lincoln with dinner in a restored Victorian home. The evening starts with cocktails in the garden (weather permitting) and continues with dishes representing both the North and the South. 9. THE BAREFOOT CONTESSA by Ina Gartner: True to the Contessa's Hamptons' tradition of seasonal food served with a gourmet twist, this menu will be an out-of-the book inspiration for a Hudson Street buffet complete with a signature cocktail. 10. THE GODFATHER by Mario Puzo: Dine in the spirit of la famiglia Corleone, who knew a thing or two about food. Perhaps you recall the wedding scene, or the line that followed a murder, "Leave the gun. Take the cannolis." A menu from southern Italy awaits you. 11. THE SHIPPING NEWS by E. Annie Proulx: Proulx's darkly comic novel explores the "lovers' knot" that pulls the hardluck hero Quoyle to the Newfoundland coast. Although she cites cod cheeks and fried bologna as local culinary highlights, this dinner will offer more tempting treasures from the sea. 12. THE WIZARD OF OZ by L. Frank Baum: Follow the yellow brick road to a wickedly good time and an autumn feast of classic American fare. No cyclone is needed to find the way - simply click your heels and say, "There's no place like Hoboken." 13. TROPIC OF CANCER by Henry Miller: Come celebrate all things decadent! We start with a real Absinthe toast to one of the greatest and most frequently banned writers of his generation and then, in his honor, feast on French-inspired fare. 14. UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN by Frances Mayes: Frances Mayes' poetic story of personal restoration through the physical renovation of an old villa in Tuscany will provide the text and inspiration for spirited conversation and fine Tuscan cuisine. 15. VALLEY OF THE DOLLS by Jacqueline Susann: Celebrate the 1960's with Susann's "Dolls," who struggle to the top of the entertainment industry in New York and Hollywood. Once they arrive, they find there's nowhere else to go but down. It'll be quite a ride! 16. ZOHRA'S LADDER AND OTHER MOROCCAN TALES by Pamela Windo: Come to the Casbah for a banquet that draws on the intricately spiced - but not "hot"- cuisine of Morocco.
