Brochure issued by the Hudson Trust Company about Hoboken history mural painted for bank. No date, circa 1941-1952. Single folio, 7" high x 10" wide, [4] pp., printed in black and white. The brochure is about a mural commissioned by the bank for its headquarters at Newark and Hudson Streets, Hoboken. It was probably done on the occasion of its fiftieth,1940, or sixtieth anniversary, 1950 (chartered in 1890; issue dates suggested by the listed name of Clarence G. Meeks as President which he became on Jan. 14, 1941 and an acknowledgement to Nina Hatfield, Librarian, Hoboken Public Library from 1921-1952.) Apparently located in a public space. Bank no longer in business. Site is no longer used as a bank and disposition of the mural is not known. The mural shown on page [1] was painted by Robert C. Terrel of Jersey City. Signed at lower right corner with date: 41. (see notes.) Page [2] discussed the mural and its contents. The ten foot high by sixteen foot wide painting's central image is the circular railway erected by John Stevens in 1825 on approximately the site of the bank's building. The view is east from Washington where City Hall is now. It is surrounded by six historical images: the "Half Moon"; "the oldest church in Hoboken"; detail from 1805 (sic - 1804, Charles Loss) map showing the bank's site; ferryboat "Fairy Queen" 1825; "Astor Villa"; copy of 1812 map drawing of "idea" for circular railroad track. Notes: Information about the mural artist Robert C. Terrel received 2014 by email from grandson Robert Bremmer: I sometimes check the web for references to my grandfather, Robert C. (Charles) Terrel, and was pleased to find this reference to one of his murals. He was very proud of this piece. I believe, from the way he talked when I was a kid, it was probably done around 1950, as in the 40's he was an actor and model in NYC. When I knew him, he had moved from New Jersey to Madison Connecticut, and had an art studio in his basement at 23 Seaview Ave. He had small copies of this mural and some photos. He loved to do historical art research and mural work, his other specialty was gold leaf. My mom was his third daughter, Patricia. ==== Status: OK Status By: dw Status Date: 2008-02-12
