Longshoremen's hooks used by Donald "Red" Barrett on the Hoboken docks in the 1960's.
Object/Artifact
Longshoremen's hooks used by Donald "Red" Barrett (Hoboken resident) on the Hoboken docks in the 1960's. Ca. 4" long wood handle with 3" long metal hook. Plastic tubing around hook near shank. Two examples, a left handed and right handed one.
The small size of each hook in this set was for coffee, peppers and similarly bagged items.
A good example of work gear used by a union worker at the Hoboken docks for loading and unloading ships. Barrett, known as "Red" Barrett, was a longtime employee at the piers (as well as a photographer who documented them and the work.) He retired sometime in the 1970s.
