Menu: Duke's Restaurant. Bill of Fare. Hoboken, N.J. No date, circa 1895-1912. Single folio, 6-3/16" wide x 9-5/8" high, [4] pp. Paper weight is circa a bond or light weight text.
Duke's Restaurant was at Duke's House, corner of Newark St. and Hudson Place (facing Lackawannna Plaza) which was a "cafe/restaurant" of the proprietor Martin Daab, Jr. as stated in the January 1909 "Hoboken Illustrated" (New York Dawn, Special Edition; archives 2005.024.0002) where it also noted that it had been a landmark for "over 30 years." Thus this restaurant was founded in the 1870s. Aspects of it could be considered as a bar or saloon.
The food is generally typical of the era and probably on the plain side although see the notes below for page [2]. Prices for food and liquor are typical of the turn of the century era and further research on them may reveal a more precise date of this item. The fact that absinthe was offered dates this as earlier than 1912 when it became illegal plus the typographic font style and wine prices suggest the earlier period of the 1890s.
pg [1]: cover title; has printer's mark: Callahan & Gartlan, Print, New York (this company was known to be active in the last quarter of the 19th century; history after 1900 is unknown at present.)
pg [2]: Bill of Fare; Oysters; Soups, Fish; Roast; Entrees; Egg; Vegetables. Items are priced except the categories without any listed items: Fish; Roast; Entrees. This suggests a separate menu board or a printed insert for them and they may have been more elaborate dishes than the ordinary fare.
pg [3]: Bill of Fare; Dishes to Order; Cold Dishes; Dessert.
pg [4]: Wine List. Listings included: Champagnes; Bordeaux; Burgundy; Rhine Wines; Liquors - Wines & Mixed Drinks; Cordials; Hungarian Wine (red and white); Sherry - Port - Madiera; Ale and Porter; Mineral Water; also Lager Bier and Thuringer Bier.
Wines were available by quarts and pints (some by the half pint.)
