Document: Agreement for Building [Engine House] between the City of Hoboken and Richard Coles, Dec. 8, 1855. Two leaves 7-7/8" wide x 12-1/4" high tipped together at top edge, [3] pp., holographic ink plus graphite and blue pencil. PDF on file.
Coles, a Hoboken mason, was to do the masonry work for a firehouse at the southwest corner of Washington and Sixth Streets "agreeably to the Drawings & Specifications, for mason and materials for a building, made by William Hexamer, City Surveyor of said City..." See archives 2010.010.0052 for a document dated Dec. __, 1855 being an agreement for the carpenter and construction work on the same building.
Document was edited by several different hands with many line-outs, cross-outs, emendations and additions. While most editing is ink, there are few in graphite and blue pencil. While this document is folded and marked with the appearance of a clerk's file copy, it is unsigned and apparently a working draft of this contract.
