Document: Agreement for Building [Engine House] between the City of Hoboken and Charles H. Knighton, Dec. __, 1855. Two leaves 8" wide x 12-1/4" high tipped together at top edge, [3] pp., holographic ink with graphite and blue pencil. PDF on file.
Knighton was to do "Carpenter's work" for a firehouse at the southwest corner of Washington and Sixth Streets "agreeably to the Drawings & Specifications, for mason and materials for a building, made by William Hexamer, City Surveyor of said City..." He essentially was the builder or contractor for the project. See archives 2010.010.0051 for a document dated Dec. 8, 1855 being an agreement for the mason and masonry work on the same building.
Document was lightly edited by at least two different hands with emendations and additions. While most editing is ink, there are a few in graphite and blue pencil. While this document is folded and marked with the appearance of a clerk's file copy, the date lacks a specific day, is unsigned and without the city seal. It was apparently a working draft of this contract.
