The petition by the complaintant was signed at the end by five other men. The petitioner arrived in Hoboken on a Morris & Essex Railroad train on June 21 and was at the Hoboken Ferry Co. terminal awaiting a ferry to New York City. Crowding, close quarters and a fainting woman led to a disturbance with the ferryhouse gateman. Hoboken Police officer Hammond appeared and as the crowd demanded the arrest of the gateman for assault, Hammond did so, but also arrested Goldthwaite who complains he was not guilty of any crime and treated unfairly as the gateman was soon released, but he was not. Goldthwaite and his fellow witnesses request the dismissal of Hammond.
