Archive
Menu. A Happy New Year 1917. Duke's House, Hoboken, N.J. Probably December 31, 1917. Single folio, printed and embossed cardstock, 4-5/16" wide x 6-1/2" high.
The menu does not state "New Year's Eve", so the question could be: was this menu for December 31, 1916 or 1917 or even for January 1, 1917? The text printed inside "Let's hail with mirth the New Year's birth* [sic] -- When The Lights Got Out!" suggests a New Year's Eve and the menu itself which seems rather spare would suggest the end of 1917. That would have been the end of the first calendar year that the United States was part of World War I. The fact that the area of Hoboken where the restaurant was located was virtually a part of the U.S. Army Port of Embarkation and the restrictions on foods, makes it likely that this was Dec. 31, 1917.
