DescriptionCigarette advertising card [N140]: Annie Sommerville in Colors of Hoboken Yacht Club; issued by W. Duke & Sons, New York, no date (1890.) Color lithography, cardstock 2-1/2" wide x 4" high, rounded corners, printed both sides. This card was part of a "Yacht Club Colors of the World" series issued by the tobacco company. The full series had fifty cards, un-numbered, for the clubs listed on the back. See notes for full text. There were two different issues of this card. The one present here is from the Duke N140 series. It is a reprint of a smaller version (N91) issued in 1889. The larger size allowed for a nautical themed border on the front. According to a collector / dealer's online description of the set, this border has been seen on this series in blue, gray and gold. It is printed in gray on the card here. See objects 2013.005.0106 for the smaller 1889 card. Although no printer's imprint is found on it, it was printed by Knapp & Co., Lithographers, New York. (Imprint is found on the smaller card.) Annie Sommerville (while printed as Sommerville, the name has been seen as Somerville or Summerville) was a nineteenth century actress. An albumen photo of her appears on other tobacco cards of the period such as the Actress Series for Duke's Cameo Cigarettes; Photos from Life series (N152) for Duke's Preferred Stock Cigarettes; Annie Summerville, Corsair Co., from the Actors and Actresses series (N45, Type 6) for Virginia Brights Cigarettes.
