B+W photo of World War I Liberty Bond ship float at Washington & 6th Sts., Hoboken, n.d, ca. June-Aug. 1918.
Photograph
Black-and-white photo of World War One Liberty Bond ship float on Washington Street, south of Sixth Street, Hoboken, no date, 1918 probably between June and August. 3-9/16" high x 4-7/16" wide. No photographer indicated. Reverse has an undated modern holographic ink notation describing scene. Remains of album mounting tabs.
The vertical sign on the corner building is "Public Service" which was Public Service Gas & Electric at 538 Washington St, the northwest corner of Sixth Street and Washington Street. (View is north - northwest.)
Sign at left on float: Buy Your Liberty Bonds at This Battle Ship.
Per a postcard postmarked April 22, 1918 (objects 2006.034.1134): "This ship is helping Uncle Sam win the war. It started at 14th St. and now is at 9th and Washington Str. It moves a block for every $300,000 and all together Hoboken must get $4,200,000." Since the float is seen here at Sixth Street, the total raised must have been 2.4 million dollars by this block and the likely date is likely somewhere in the June to August period.
