Digital photos, five, of the Wavertree, an 1885 square-rigged cargo vessel, on the Hudson River with a tugboat as it was being moved to the Bethlehem Steel Hoboken Shipyard, circa late May or early June 1981. Original color prints ca. 3-1/2" x 5". Scans are 200 percent and not enhanced. Photographer not indicated, but it is probably Anton Peskens or a family member (he was a Hoboken resident and employee at Bethlehem Steel Shipyard.) Reverse of all were blank; no processor's date codes. Tiffs media archive. The vessel was being brought to the shipyard from the East River for some major work including work on the decks, scrapping and painting of the hull and replacement of the bowsprit. Vessel is on the National Register of Historic Places. Notes: THE NEW YORK TIMES Published: August 12, 1981 [this was apparently the caption to a published photo taken by staff photographer William Sauro.] Square-Rigger Returns to South Street Seaport After a $500,000 Renovation From the deck of the sailing vessel Peking, spectators watched yesterday as the Wavertree returned to her berth at the museum. The 96-year-old iron-hulled vessel had been undergoing restoration since May at a shipyard in Hoboken, N.J., including the installation of a new 28-foot bowsprit. The three-masted ship was purchased in 1968 for $70,000 in Argentina, where she was being used as a sand barge. Her repair costs so far have totaled $1.5 million. ------ From American Heritage, April 1983 NEW YORK, NEW YORK: The Wavertree, an 1885 square-rigged cargo vessel, is one of the few survivors of the age of deep-water sailing ships and one of the last square-rigged craft that actually sailed from the port of New York. It is being restored by the South Street Seaport Museum (most of the work is done—only the midship deckhouse needs fixing). When completed, the Wavertree will be an exhibition vessel as accurate as possible in every detail. She will be open to the public year round.
