Photograph
Digital image of black-and-white photo of Second National Bank building at 77-81 River Street, Hoboken, no date, circa 1920s. Original: 8" x 10" print. Photograph by Brown Brothers, 1462 Broadway, N.Y. as stamped on reverse. Source: S.C. Williams Library, Stevens Institute of Techology. Tiffs media archive.
View is northeast from Hudson Place of the building best known as 77 River St. while called the bank building because it was originally built for the bank. No bank signage appears here and apparently the bank was no longer present. Signage in all first floor windows and on corners is for Joseph J. Garibaldi Insurance, Real Estate.
At the corner of Hudson Place and River St. is an office of Jagels, Bellis & Co. who were primarily coal dealers. The office is below street level.
Buildings from left: Steneck Building (tall white building), Hoboken Post Office, Hoboken Land & Improvement Co. (1 Newark St.; note lighted sign with company name on building and the narrow eaves), Second National Bank.
At the right edge on Hudson Place east of River St., is a barber shop, Lackawanna House (a hotel or maybe a flophouse) and Caldes (a restaurant.)
Note the electric traffic signal on a center island. The character of this element suggests the image is from later in the 1920s or possibly up to 1931 (old post office seen was demolished circa 1931-1932.)
This photo and 2009.008.0004 were taken at the same time and photographer.
