Briggs (Chicago Daily News), Dec. 2, 1918; to "All piers under jurisdiction of this Port"; good "to and including Dec. 6, 1918." Printed paper form, 2-1/2" high x 4-1/16" wide with ink-stamped issue date, typewritten entries and ink signature (not legible) of authorizing officer. Press-numbered with pass number: 1362.
The line "By Command of Major General Shanks" has "Major General [David C.] Shanks" x'ed over and the name "Brig-Gen McManus" [Brigadier General George H. McManus] typed above.
The printed text "Not Good on Sailing Days" has been crossed out and initialed by the issuing officer. Also note that the line "When Accompanied By" is unused indicating that post-war port security did not require someone to escort the visitor.
This press identification card was issued by the U.S. Army after the Armistice ending World War I. The facility was still labeled as a Port of Embarkation even as it became a Port of Debarkation.
