Sepia-tone photos, 4, of Lawson & Macmurray Lumber Co., 11th & Hudson Sts., Hoboken, 1938.
Photograph
Sepia-tone photos, four, of the Lawson & Macmurray Lumber Co. site at Eleventh and Hudson Streets, Hoboken, Jan. 15, 1938 and spring/summer of 1938. Original prints were 2-3/4" x 4-1/2" wide; reverse of all except first print were blank; scanned 2009. Photographs taken by Robert C. Sylvester from home at 1026 Hudson St., Hoboken. Digital images only; enlarged inkjet reference prints on file. Large, high resolution tiffs media archive.
Elevated view is from the third or fourth floor of an apartment building and is looking east - northeast. This series of photos, starting in January, shows the end of operations of the lumber company as the site is cleared for construction beginning in that year of the Maxwell House Coffee plant. See notes.
01-2: reverse of this print had contemporary ink date of Jan. 15, 1938. View is east with lumber company still covering a major part of the site; at the bottom right are freight cars on the Hoboken Manufacturers Railroad line on River Road (Elysian Park trees are seen in the corner.) The ship at the left is not identified; its location is approximately pier 12.
02-2: a later view more northeast and at least springtime (note leaves on trees); lumber is no longer present. The entry to the site on Hudson at the bottom right of center is at Eleventh Street and River Road. Work crew is seen along the crane rails.
03-3: another view that is essentially the same as 02-2 (note difference in amount of smoke at center.)
04-3: same view later in the spring or early summer; the crane is still present, but the site is cleared except for the railroad tracks, crane and crane rails.
(Image numbers refer to file numbers: on file are unadjusted and uncropped versions of all images.)
Related image is 2009.026.0101, which is a photo of the Maxwell House plant under construction and taken from same viewpoint.
