Sepia-tone photos, 3, of S.S. Leviathan departing from Pier 4, Hoboken, Jan. 25, 1938.
Photograph
Sepia-tone photos, three, of the S.S. Leviathan departing from Pier 4, Hoboken, Jan. 25, 1938. Original prints were 2-3/4" x 4-1/2" wide except one smaller one; reverse of all were blank; scanned 2009. Photographs taken by Robert C. Sylvester, resident of 1026 Hudson St., Hoboken. Digital images only; enlarged inkjet reference prints on file. Large, high resolution tiffs media archive.
The ship was originally the German ocean liner Vaterland. It became a U.S. Army troop transport in World War I as the U.S.S. Leviathan and after the war until the time of these photos, an occasional passenger vessel as the S.S. Leviathan. The steamship is seen departing Hoboken and the United States for the last time. It was going to Scotland to be scrapped.
The story of this sailing is recounted in detail in "World's Greatest Ship"; The Story of the Leviathan, Volume VI, (Frank O. Braynard. Kings Point, NY: American Merchant Marine Museum, 1972) chapters XVII and XVIII.
While the photos are undated, the Leviathan made only this sailing when the photographer Robert C. Sylvester was actively recording Hoboken scenes in 1938 (cf. 2009.026.0100 and .0101.) The date is found in the Braynard book and the detail there allows the time of day to be estimated.
06-2: view is east and the smoke is coming from the two forward funnels; the boilers were lit at 9 A.M. This photo is probably between about noon and 3 o'clock.
07-2: view is northeast; three tugboats are seen; circa 4 pm.
08-2: circa 4:45-4:50 pm. the vessel is moving towards the river (per Braynard: the prow cleared the pier at 4:54 pm.)
