Collections Item Detail
Metal double-sided advertising sign, "Castles Ice Cream." From 1001 Bloomfield St., Hoboken.
Object/Artifact
Enameled metal double-sided advertising sign, "Castles Ice Cream" removed from a street level shop at 1001 Bloomfield St., Hoboken that was once Joseph Miller & Son, a retail butcher and food shop. Heavy guage metal, 20"w x 28"h, primarily yellow with orange. Lettering in black and orange. 3 mounting holes. Damage with loss of enameling at many edge points.
Castles Ice Cream was a Sealtest brand. No date, ca. 1950-1960.
A butcher/deli was at this location until ca. 1980. During the 1980's there was an antiques shop called Salmagundi until the late 1980's. It then became a housewears store, Bataglia's (now at 2 locations on Washington St.), for about 5 years starting ca. 1990. When they moved in, the original walk-in cooler was still in place at the rear as well as a butcher block counter the full depth of the store on the north side with a continuous chrome wall strap with meat hooks above it. After them, it was a discount clothing store for ca. 2 years and now another housewears store, Home Slice.
