Cast iron drain cover with decorative low relief as used in Hoboken, no date, ca. 1890-1910.
Object/Artifact
Cast drain cover cover with decorative arabesque relief as used in Hoboken, no date, ca. 1890-1910. Probably made late 19th century and used from 1890-1940. Iron, 17.75" diameter, slightly domed top with three 1.75" high prongs on bottom. Worn top. No manufacturer's marks.
Although there is not a maker's name, it was probably cast by Mansfield & Scudder (or one of the firms related to it such as Fagan or Mansfield & Fagan) of Hoboken. The fact that the diameter is the same as objects 2008.004.0019 which has the foundry's name on it and the same arabesque ornamentation (confirmed by rubbings) suggests that they came from the same foundry or at the very least that the same stock mold was used.
Location where it was once located is not known.
