Sepia-tone photo of snow fort with 3 children in backyard, American flags, Hoboken?, n.d., ca. 1912-1918.
Photograph
Sepia-tone photo of a snow fort or igoo with 3 children in a backyard, American flags, Hoboken?, no date, circa 1912-1918.
Print, 4" wide x 5" high. Photographer unknown. Reverse is blank. People are not identified. Two prints, labeled 1-1, 1-2.
Location of this winter scene other than a backyard (note laundry lines) is unknown. The two boys, one seated with a dog, and a girl are seen with two men. The conical shaped snow fort (or igloo) has a full size American flag at the top along with the other boy. Two smaller flags are to the left and one can be seen as a 48-star flag which dates this photo as at least late 1912, probably later. The entrance to the fort has two pieces of fencing, one with small built hole such as a dog might use. Also seen are japanese lanterns and the box next to the seated boy is a 'soap' box.
The flags make this a seemingly patriotic scene which suggests the latter end of the date range of 1917-1918 when the U.S. was in World War One.
Noteworthy is the open liquor bottle on the fort near a japanese lantern and that the two men each have hold a shot glass with liquor. Obviously Prohibition had not started (Jan 1920.)
Also note the fire escapes.
