Catalogue of Keuffel & Esser Co., New York; General Office & Factories - Hoboken, N.J. 38th Edition. February 1936; this copy issued January 1939. Copy serial number 62016. Original dust wrapper. 8vo decorated cloth boards, pp. viii, 581, illustrated. Attached to front pastedown is a sample card of a "Selection of K&E Drawing and Tracing Papers" with attached cards for K&E records, original & duplicate. In pocket at rear is the sixty page price list of June 1, 1937 for the 38th edition.
With: K&E Leroy Lettering Sets. A sixteen page illustrated catalog, date stamped by recipient, Jan. 14, 1939. This item is separately catalogued as archives 2009.006.0170.01. It is priced.
An excellent copy of an essentially unused catalogue showing how it was distributed with a dustwrapper imprinted with instructions and with customer registration form cards inside the front cover for mailing list needs. Since K & E printed several tens of thousands of catalogues (library 2009.006.0031, another copy of this edition, is number 8419 and the copy here, 62016, would suggest that 70,000 or more were printed), the work of distributing them and tracking customers who received them (and who would need to be mailed updates of price lists or products) would have been an important aspect of business operations in Hoboken.
Dust wrapper front and leaf with price list notice (catalog is not priced as is stated in notice preceding pg [i]) have the "Received" ink stamp of the Webster Cold Forge Co., Jan. 14, 1939. (Webster Cold Forge, established 1925, is in Detroit, Michigan.)
The dust wrapper, a plain brown kraft paper, is imprinted on front only: NEW | K & E | Catalogue | 38th Edition | [griffin trademark] | Upon Receipt of this | Catalogue Please Use | It In Place Of Any Pre- | vious Edition You May | Have On Hand | Keuffel & Esser Co.
Code at bottom: 8950
The paper sample with 12 feelers (see library 2009.006.0031 for an image of the sample book) has an orange printed cardstock cover with with copy number press numbered above lines for the recipient to fill in: "This Catalogue is the Property of..." Two cards, 3" x 5", with perforations for detachment are at the bottom. The upper one is Form 220 and labeled "Original." It has the catalogue copy number as well as lines to be filled in for name and address of recipient, who furnished the catalogue and dealer. It was intended to be mailed to K&E in Hoboken when completed so that the information could be added to the K&E mailing list - there are boxes related to that operation at K&E. The lower card is labeled "Duplicate" and was intended to be retained by the dealer for their records (as instructed on the "Original.") Both cards are unused.
The traditional bird's-eye view, a black-and-white drawing, "General Office and Factories, Hoboken, N.J." appears following the illustrated title.
