Photograph
Sepia-tone photo of a woman and many children at a festival with Maypole and patriotic decor, no place (Hoboken?), no date, circa 1905-1920. 5" x 7" print on photographer's mount; mounting board is irregularly trimmed. Photographer not indicated. Reverse of mount blank.
From the family collection of the Kirchgessner family that operated United Decorating Company, established 1899 in Hoboken. No identifications have been made.
German social organizations were very active in this period and the Kirchgessner were participants as well as providers of decorations and costumes such as the ones seen here; the decorated wheel on the cart , maypole, sashes and small banners. Five children wear the same cap style. A boy 'king' with crown and a girl 'queen' with head dress are seen. The event, while unknown, may very well have been outside Hoboken as German ethnic cultural festivals and picnics that Hoboken residents attended were often in Schuetzen Park and other locales.
