Davis Master Pattern Baking Formulas. Published by Home Economics Department, R. B. Davis Company, Hoboken, New Jersey. Copyright 1938, Second Edtion 1940.
Booklet, 6" x 9" high, 80 pp. plus cover; black-and-white and color photos & illustrations. Table of Contents; Index.
While stated as a 'Second Edition', it appears without textual comparison the same as the 1938 issue which was the 'first edition' Since it retains the 1938 copyright, it is more likely a 2nd printing rather than edition.
A more comprehensive recipe and baking instruction book than earlier Davis publications (it apparently shows the influence of the very popular cookbook, The Joy of Cooking, which had its first trade edition in 1936.) Baking Formulas was a new title in a long line of publications created to promote the Davis company's main product, Davis OK Baking Powder. While 'Master Pattern' in the title suggests it may have been intended for bakeries or restaurants, the recipes, images of kitchens and the presentations of finished baked goods definitely appear to be for the home cook or domestic help.
It also promoted two other products they offered: Cocomalt and Cut-Rite Waxed Paper. Cocomalt, a chocolate malted beverage they made, is found in the ingredients list of selected recipes. Cut-Rite Waxed Paper is seen in photographs which show the box and the paper in use as well as instructional text specifiying it in some steps. It is a product that they did not make (another Hoboken company manufactured it), but were the exclusive distributors for it at that time.
