Sepia-tone photos, 6, Memorial Day Parade, 600 block Washington St., Hoboken, 1947, plus 2 related photos.
Photograph
Sepia-tone photos, six, of Memorial Day Parade, 600 block of Washington Street, Hoboken, 1947, plus 2 related photos.
2-3/4" wide x 4-1/2" high prints. Photographs taken by Irene Madias (Steve and Irene Madias family) of Hoboken. Reverse of all have processor's inkstamped number 379; otherwise blank. Identification of year by donor's source. None of the people have been identified.
View is east-southeast of the parade marching north on Washington Street from Sixth Street to the middle of the 600 block. Photos 1 to 6 were taken from a elevated position, probably the second floor of 614 Washington Street where a relative lived, Constantinos G. Madias. None of the parade units have been identified.
photo 1: military color guard with adults, young adults and children in service uniforms both army and navy; this view looks to the corner of Sixth and Washington Streets.
photo 2: a majorette leads an all-girl drum corps
photo 3: a military honor guard leads a veterans contingent
photo 4: this photo shows little of the parade (flag-bearers, majorettes, baton twirlers), but features the buildings on the east side of Washington St.
photo 5: Girl Scout Troops unit; flags for troops 3 and 4 are identifiable.
photo 6: naval uniforms, veterans (this photo is blurred)
photo 7: view of Girl Scouts color guard probably practicing at some date before the parade; location not known but possibly Tenth and Adams Streets. See related or below.
photo 8: partial view of girls in costumes / uniforms performing at athletic field. No date, but note that all 8 photos share the same processor's number which indicates that the images were taken on the same roll of film. The number of spectators seen lining the edge of the field suggests this was performance rather than just a practice.
The group is also useful for showing the facades of businesses and their signs in this block including Alberta Market, which was at 607 Washington St. North of it was an A&P Self-Service Super Market (The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co.) at 609-611 Washington St. (Noteworthy is that the Alberta Market also stated "Self Service" on its facade; it's competitor next door, A & P, was a chain with over 20,000 locations.)
Northernmost building seen was 613-615 Washington St. which is still standing as of catalog date. Out-of-view to the north would have been the U.S. Theatre. A sign for Bowling hangs out from the building just south of Alberta Market; a Castle Point Academy was at 601 Washington St. as of 1951 telephone directory.
See photo catalog 2011.005.0061 for a related series of 2 photos of the Demarest High School marching band practicing for the 1946 Memorial Day Parade where the band is apparently on the athletic field at Tenth and Adams Streets.
