Photograph
Sepia-tone photos, five, of the aftermath of the August 1905 ferry and railroad terminal fire, Hoboken, no date, ca. August 8-10, 1905.
Multiple prints for 4 of the five images, twelve prints in all, ca. 4" x 5", varying sheet sizes. Photographer unknown. Reverse of all blank except for photos 2-1 and 4-1 which have the pencil note (contemporary ?): Hoboken Pier Fire. (Where multiple prints exist, they are labeled by photo no. and print no., e.g. 1-1 for photo 1, print 1.) Best print of any group is seen cropped and enhanced. All prints are also seen in original condition.
The fire which destroyed the Hoboken (Lackawanna Railroad) Ferry Terminal and the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Terminal plus it did major damage to Duke's House, a bar / restaurant. It started on August 7, 1905.
Photo 1: view east from Hudson Place to the destroyed ferry terminal, probably August 8th; skeletal frame of tower is seen with part of ferryhouse behind it; firemen (Hoboken Fire Department?) at right still putting water on the remains. Four prints, 1-1 to 1-4; 1-1 is best, others faded and chipped.
Photo 2: view northeast of the remains of the ferry terminal, circa August 8-10 (note umbrellas, rainy weather which could help determine date.) Right of center is a man with umbrella next to a fire hose that is still spraying water on smoldering debris. One print only, 2-1. Reverse has contemporary pencil: Hoboken Pier Fire.
Photo 3: view south of remains of the streetcar shed (North Hudson County Railway Co.) on Hudson Place, circa August 8-10. Note the direction of the tracks in the cobblestone pavement as well as the numerous overhead trolley wires. Two prints, 3-1, 3-2.
Photo 4: view northeast from Hudson Place with remains of ferry terminal mostly out-of-view to the right, circa August 9-10, possibly later. Note umbrellas, rain may help to date this. Also a women is seen; ferry service resumed very shorty after the fire and these people may be waiting to board a ferry. Two detail scans are present with the ferry Lackawanna (2) seen. (This vessel is the second of three with the name, thus Lackawanna (2)); it went into service in 1905.) Two prints, 4-1 (reverse has contemporary pencil: Hoboken Pier Fire) and 4-2.
Photo 5: view northwest of the eastern side of Duke's House showing the major damage done by the fire, circa August 9-10, possibly later. Note umbrellas, rain may help to date the image. In the background at the right center is the eastern side of the Hoboken Land & Improvement Co. building, 1 Newark St.

Notes: These photographs are from a group of 13 different images from the donor whose source stated they were found as a group. They are catalogued 2010.007.0120 to .0128. The first record is definite as to date, 1905, and the other have estimated dates. Similarities in paper, print size, etc., do tend to establish that they are Hoboken scenes.
