New Catwalk Car in Holland Tunnel
New York: Port Authority Patrolman Thomas Grupski, 416 South Bayview Avenue, Freeport, Long Island, controls New York-bound traffic in the Holland Tunnel from a two-way electric catwalk car during its first test late December 20th... The test run took place on a 2,200 foot section of miniature railroad track installed on the 2 foot-wide catwalk. The use of the patrol cars would permit police officers to cover the tunnel post faster and with greater convenience and would result in better supervision of traffic and assistance to motorists. The 1,300 pound car is two feet wide, eleven feet long, and six feet high. It is equipped with a swivel seat and duplicate sets of push buttons wich control the speed in either direction at six or 12 miles and hour. A 240-volt, three-horsepower electric moter powers the car.
