A news photo intended for newspaper or magazine publication.
The south tube (right) opened to regular traffic on December 22, 1937 (not February 1940 as the label stated; it may have been confused with the Queens Midtown Tunnel which opened on Nov. 15, 1940.) The north tube was not completed until 1944 and opened on Feb. 1, 1945. Prior to that date the south tube was used for two-way traffic; after the opening of the third tube in 1957, it became known as the center tube.
Car exiting north tube; truck south tube.
