Account books of the Hudson Trust Company, Hoboken, N.J., 13 volumes, various years 1908-1925. Canvas cloth covered boards with leather tips; imprinted spines (as listed below), ca. 20-3/4" wide x 21-1/2" high x 4 to 4-1/2" thick. Ca. 450 pages (see notes about arrangement). NOTE: weight of each volume is estimated at 40 pounds. Condition is generally good with water damage and detached spine for first volume. Apparently for trust accounts. Only years 1920-1921 and 1924-1925 are complete in this accession for the period covered with both volumes present. Volumes in accession 2011.016 (record 2011.016.0001) complete 8 ledgers here to create a complete year for a ledger number. Notes of the corresponding volumes are below. No transcription has been done. While they are not indexed, the accounts are listed alphabetically by month and two-week period and then repeat for the next month for the entire period covered by the ledger. See notes for discussion of typical entry leaves. Bank was at 84 Hudson Street, southwest corner of Newark and Hudson Streets. This bank had an association with Andrew Carnegie. Notes: The notes below also apply to 8 additional books in accession 2013.018 (record 2013.018.0001) which complete some ledger years. ==== The volumes consist of pre-printed columnar sheets with names of account holders printed in one column on each leaf (occasionally names were inserted holographically); other columns have an inkstamped month and date at the top (only banking business days will be found, thus dates are not consecutive.) Account totals and activity were recorded every day. Images are shown of a typical leaf (Ledger 7, 1913: two-page spread of entry page 9 for March, March 1-14 for account holders William Schlegel to Abel I Smith, Special) The leaves for a month are numbered as needed 1 to xx, and then start over for the next month. Depending on the number of account holders, it would vary. For the one shown, it is a spread with '9' on both leaves and covers the first 14 days of March. Page 10 would cover the same dates for the next account holders alphabetically. It repeats this way for the entire month and would start over again at '1' for the month of April and so on. This method of bookkeeping is consistent through the 18 years covered by the thirteen volumes. How the sheets were accumulated for binding is unknown.
