War Ration Book No. 4 belonging to Katherine Marinovich, Hoboken, 1943. Pamphlet 5-5.8" wide x 4-1/4" high. Interior typically consisted of 8 security paper leaves printed one side and perforated for 48 ration coupons per leaf. The insides of the cover are blank.
The form on the cover is filled out in blue ink for " Katherine Marinovich (Daughter)" who was an 8 or 9-year old Hoboken resident living with her family at 201Fourteenth St. Book no. 544576 FA .
The coupons are designated for different uses and values:
leaf 1: 'Spare', numbered 1 to 48, no denomination
leaf 2: missing
leaf 3: missing
leaf 4: 'Wheat', most coupons used, present are B1 to M1
leaf 5: 'Wheat', most coupons used, present are N1 to Z1
leaf 6: 'Cornucopia', most coupons used, present are V1 to Z1
leaf 7: 'Torch', all present in four denominations, 1, 2, 5 & 8. Twelve of each lettered N to Z.
leaf 8: 4 columns of coupons all without denomination; 1st row 'Coffee' numbered 41 to 52; 2nd and 3rd row 'Spare' numbered 50 to 71 with the top 3 not present and presumed used; 4th row 'Sugar' and only one is present, 37, but the rest were probably 28 to 40.
Ration books were issued the the U.S. Government's Office of Price Administration. This one has the 1943 date on the back cover. See also object catalog 2002.235.0003 for another ration book and 2002.235.0005 for a token given as change if you used less than the face value of the coupons.
