Hudson & Manhattan Railroad Company. Exit Coupon, August 27, 1940. Two examples, numbers 1065 & 1066. Printed paper, 5-1/4" wide x 2" high; reverse unprinted.
Surrender to Exit Collector; At any North-bound Sixth Avenue Station in lieu of Exit Fare. Good only on connecting train as part of a continuous passage to destination.
Presumably this exit coupon or ticket would have been obtained stations preceding Hoboken in the north bound direction such as the ones in Jersey City, Newark or Church Street (lower Manhattan). This fare system for certain segments and having to present a coupon or pay an exit fare is typical of the H&M. It does seem to represent a cumbersome and labor intensive method of producing revenue and accounting for it. The H&M was already in financial distress and continued in that state for the rest of its corporate life.
