Notes: 2001.126.0085 Transcription of page [1] only The corner stone was laid on May 21, 1927 amid appropriate ceremonies. During the program word was received that Chas. [Charles] A. Lindberg has landed in Paris on his epochal flight. (As the building was nearing completion) The second campaing for $338.and [thousand] was launched in February 1928. ( ) J. W. Rufus Besson was General Chairman of the Campaign while Marshall of the Men's Division & Mrs. H. Otto Wittpenn was Marshall of the Women's Division with Miss Sadie Leinkauf as Aide. Division Majors for the Men were H.E. Wilson, E.H. Magee, Louis Schelling, F.W. Janssen, $ George G. Raymond. For the Women, Mrs. Margarete George, Mrs. Henry C. Grieme [or Greine], Mrs. Gustave Petersen, Mrs. L. Fausteman and Mrs. Edward Hirsch. $150,000 was subscribed in their Campaign. It therefore, became necessary to place a heavy [crossed-out] mortgage 233,500 on the building which has proceed[ed] to the chief handicap of the Y ever since its existence. The building opened in June 1928 & the youth of Hoboken & North Hudson flocked to the Y. for the first time on a swimming pool, gymnasium, and a club house for your [illegible] opened to them. Their [illegible] the depression and the Y found it impossible for the first five years of its existence to make its way. For the past eight years, however, the Y has finally financed itself [illegible - in spite of?] the interest on the mortgage tho the drain of this expense interest charge has cut heavily into the programs. These eight years [illegible] demonstrated however that once this mortgage is lifted, the Y can adequately maintain its facility & program. 1941 has been an historic year for the Y. Its building was lost then foreclosure proceedings and then repurchased for the sum of $80,000. Mr. Max Hurwitz [illegible] actively in the negociation [sic negotiation]. The repurchase of the building on favorable terms has brought about the present, and it is hoped final, effort to free the Y from its burden of debt.
