NEW TUBE FOR TUNNEL
A huge bucketful of dirt is hoisted away while Anthony De Biase, assistant resident engineer, looks down on the start of tunneling operations for a third tube of the Lincoln Tunnel under the Hudson River. The digging has begun at the base of the nearly-completed ventilation shaft on the New Jersey side. Weehawken's railroad yards and dock border the river, with the New York skyline in the background.
