Photograph
Sepia-tone photo of ivy-covered building, location not indicated, possibly Hoboken; photo from Hoboken source, no date, circa 1910-1920.
2-13/16" high x 4-9/16" wide print. Photographer not indicated, but reverse has oval inkstamp of H. [Hermann] Jaffee, 118 Washington St., Hoboken, N.J. Penciled number: 95.
The house with a fence and generous yard may be on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology. A lettered plaque is to the right of the main entrance, but it is not legible.
Jaffee operated a camera store at 118 Washington Street in this period. Whether he just made the print for a customer or was the photographer is not known. Work by him as a credited photographer has not been seen. The image's composition with the roof cut-off would not be typical of local photographers who took images for later printed use such as postcards or publications.
From the personal papers of the late Fred E. Meyer, Hoboken Fire Department member 1956-1988.
