Photograph
Cabinet photograph of man in fine dress wearing an Independent Order of Odd Fellows medal, Hoboken, no date, ca. 1875-1887.
4-1/4" wide x 6-1/2" photographer's mount; gilt beveled edges. Photograph taken by L.[Louis] Nagel, 192 Washington St. (old street number prior to 1892; modern no. 508), Hoboken (imprint on reverse.) Man is not identified.
Hoboken did have an Odd Fellows lodge (hall was at old number 172 - 174 Washington St. - modern 412 - 414 Washington St.) The ribbon medal has the three linked rings (the I.O.O.F. symbol) above a star bearing the scales of justice. The original print resolution and the surface condition of the albumen print have not allowed any further details to be seen.
The number of Odd Fellows medals is large. They were frequently bestowed. The nature of the man's position in the lodge or associated ceremony is unknown.
