Advertisement: Captain Tootsie and the Great Jewel Robbery. (Sweets Company of America, Hoboken), no date, circa 1944. Full-page color comic strip style ad probably published in True Comics No. 38, August 1944, page unknown; single leaf removed from publication, trimmed, 7" x 9-5/16"; (reverse has the start of ongoing " series - "Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.")
The multi-panel strip promoted Tootsie Rolls which were made in Hoboken and the wrapped product is depicted in the ad plus the bottom panel is devoted to the promotion of Tootsie VM, a chocolate drink mix. "It makes milk taste like chocolatey Tootsie Rolls!"
Tootsie VM was apparently introduced in 1943 as a powdered product packaged in glass jars and to be mixed with milk. It was fortified with vitamins and minerals as this ad states which would have made it a competitor to Cocomalt (another product made at that time in Hoboken by R.B. Davis) and Ovaltine. It noted that "No Ration Points" were required for purchase.
