Photograph
Black-and-white aerial photo of Lackawanna Ferry terminal with heavy ice on the Hudson River, Hoboken, no date, circa late 1950s or early 1960s.
8" x 10" copy print. Original photographer not indicated (modern source - vendor of file copy prints - seen on back with inkstamps and other notations.)
View is northwest looking at the ferry slips at Lackawanna Terminal where a significant amount of river ice is seen. Four of the six slips have ferries berthed at them. Smoke is seen from only the southernmost ferry and apparently it was running its propellor as some the ice pack is slightly open at the river end. No recent arrivals or departures are indicated by larger openings in the ice pack. It would appear that the purpose of the photo was to document (probably for a news service) the hampering of ferry service by the frozen river; probably for a news ser
Snow is present on roof tops and on the Hoboken streets, but streets themselves are clear. Hudson Place up to River Street is seen; bus terminal; Duke's House; Hoboken Land & Improvement Co. building (1 Newark St.)
The dating by source stated 1960s, but some details would not place this image very far in the the 1960s: the name Erie has not yet been added above the Lackawanna facade lettering across the ferry slips (Erie and the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad merged in late 1960 with operations combined at Hoboken); automobiles generally appear to have rounded bodies that are more likely from the mid-1950s than early 1960s.
