B+W photos, 2, of L. Pini & Sons parade float with giant pipe wrench on trailer for March 28, 1955 Hoboken Centennial Parade.
Photograph
Black-and-white photos, two, of L. Pini & Sons parade float with giant pipe wrench, mounted on flatbed trailer for March 28, 1955 Hoboken Centennial Parade.
8-1/2" x 11" wide modern digital inkjet prints. Photographer not indicated. Reverse of both are blank. Specific street location undetermined.
Parade was for the celebration the Centennial of the Incorporation of the City of Hoboken. Both photos were taken at night and not during the daytime parade. Whether they were taken in the early morning or in the evening of parade day or the evening before is not apparent.
While the images are blurred, note the creases or tears at the lower right are sharp indicating the modern copy was an accurate reproduction and that the original images were as seen.
L. Pini & Sons, Plumbing & Heating, was (and still is) located at 415 Washington Street, Hoboken. Founded in 1918. The wrench as seen in photos has the name "L. Pini & Sons" on the handle.
The giant prop wrench seen was donated to the Museum in 2013 (objects 2013.049.0001) by another company, Riverwest Plumbing & Heating Supply, Inc. That company was founded in 1994. It had been repainted after that date with the River West (or Riverwest) name replacing the L. Pini & Sons name.
Photo 1: view of the float with three men standing beside it (unidentified, but presumably members of the Pini family).
Photo 2: slightly wider view of the same side without the men present.
For scale purposes, the wrench (primarily plywood with some sheet metal and rubber tires) is about 16 feet long.
