B+W photo of west side of River St. from nos. 312 to 332 at Fourth St., Hoboken, Sept. 1, 1947.
Photograph
Black-and-white photo of the west side of River Street from number 312 to the end of the block, no. 332, at Fourth St., Hoboken, Sept. 1, 1947.
4" x 5" wide print. Photographer not indicated. Reverse has inkstamped date: Sep 1 1947. Reverse has holographic ink description by the photographer as recorded at bottom.
A useful view of an area that was across from the southern piers and was the last block of River Street before Hudson Square Park at Fourth St. Bars and hotels lined this block for many decades until redevelopment came in the 1960s and all buildings were condemned and demolished for Marineview Towers. One charity organization, Holland Seamen Home & Immigration Bureau, was at the corner of 4th and River.
Notably, no. 314, Vandenberg's Tavern, was a key location used in the filming of "On the Waterfront" in 1952-1953.
Detail 1, lower left: Holland American Bar, 312 River St.
Detail 2, second from lower left: Vandenberg's Tavern, 314 River St.
Detail 3, third from left: Monopol Tavern, 316 River St.
Detail 4, fourth from left: unidentified bar, 318 River St.
Detail 5, fifth from left: Sunrise Bar, 320 River St.; Hoek Van Holland Cafe, 322-324 River St.
Detail 6, sixth from left: New Amsterdam Bar (Grill / Tap Room), 326 River St.; Holland House (unknown as a bar or restaurant at what appears to be 328 River St.), but which is probably affiliated with the Holland Seamen Home & Immigration Bureau at the corner of Fourth and River, 332 (or 334) River St. A common name for the Bureau was the Holland Seamen's Home or Mission.
The Dutch names for bars, cafe and charity reflected the fact that the Holland America Line was only a block away at the Fifth Street Pier.
Note in the right background, the Edwin A. Stevens Building on the other side of Hudson Square Park; flagpole is seen.
