B+W photo negative of Public Service Coordinated Transport terminal, Hudson Pl. east of River St., Hoboken, Nov. 1949.
Photograph
Black-and-white photographic negative of Public Service Coordinated Transport (PSCT) terminal at Hudson Place and River Street, Hoboken, November 1949.
2-1/4" x 3-1/2" sheet. Photographer not indicated. No markings.
View is east from River Street showing the two level streetcar terminal that was adjacent to the Lackawanna Terminal of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad (the large tower to the right - the ferry portion can be seen in the left background). Beneath the PSCT terminal was the Hoboken terminal of the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad (the H&M; Tubes; now the PATH).
The streetcar or trolley terminal is to the right with its second story structure extending over Hudson Place. This was a turnaround loop for streetcars using the terminal (they ran on the elevated line along Observer Highway) and it also included access points to and from street level for passengers. The date is significant as streetcars were being discontinued (replaced by buses) and this terminal would be demolished within a couple years.
View includes the north side of Hudson Place with the exterior of a bank building, Trust Company of New Jersey, at 12-14 Hudson Place. Further east on that side is the Ideal Cafeteria and Duke's House (numbers 2 to 6).
Noteworthy is that the Lackawanna Terminal does not have clock faces on it near the top.
Also seen are parked vehicles at parking meters including two taxicabs; all are parked head-in. Note: street lights; truck.
