Trip pass, Going Coupon, issued by the office of President William White of Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, N.Y. to Mrs. Octavius Thomas, Elmira, Dec. 4, 1945. Printed paper (security paper) form with typewritten entries, 3" x 4" wide. Text below.
The pass is a type of railroad transportation ticket. The woman was the widow of a deceased conductor. Whether it was a bereavement courtesy or standard railroad policy to offer such travel to a family member is not indicated. It is not signed by White (who should not be confused with William H. White.) (See archives 2010.007.0477 for a 1954 version of this type of pass.)
The D.L.& W. had its headquarters in New York, where this item was issued, but Hoboken was the eastern terminus of passenger rail operations. The train connecting Elmira and Buffalo have originated or ended in Hoboken.
