The ocean liner S.S. Statendam of the Holland America Line caught fire, but was rescued. A spectacular fire cause $500,000 damage along the Hoboken, N.J. waterfront today, and while it burned a number of minor explosions occurred, arousing New York across the Hudson River, and affording a thrilling show for thousands massed on skyscraper roofs and windows of mid-Manhattan. The fire was reported to have started in a freight car, spreading rapidly through the freight station and setting fire to the liner Statendam which was moored in the path of the flames. The liner was towed into the Hudson where the blaze was quickly extinguished from her rigging. Here is a view as the firefighters fought to control the flames on the pier.
