HOBOKEN, N.J. - This photo, said to be the only one ever taken of him at his desk in this country, shows Sir Thomas Lipton at work in the office of his Hoboken Plant on the 82nd anniversary of his birth.

His birth date is actually listed as May 10th (1848), so he is indeed 82 years old in this photo. (Died Oct. 2, 1931.)
Lipton himself usually gave 1850 as the year he was born and this has been repeated in many sources (including 1931 obituaries and even the Encyclopedia Britannica), but records listing him as three years of age in 1851 makes 1848 as his year of birth. See notes.

Notes: Per Wikipedia: Although Thomas Lipton would later state that he was born at his family's home in Crown Street in the Gorbals in 1850 there is no record of this in the parish register for that period. In the 1851 census, however, the family were recorded as living in the north of Glasgow, with young Thomas being listed as being aged 3 years old. It would appear that he was therefore born in 1848. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Lipton Original or Copy: Original Status: OK Status By: dw Status Date: 2014-05-15
