Notes: Exhibition 2014: Hoboken, Ellis Island, and the Immigrant Experience, 1892-1924 ==== Text printed on back of card: 75 — (V23427) WOMEN, CHILDREN, AND LUGGAGE JUST LANDED AT ELLIS ISLAND, N. Y. These women and children have just landed at Ellis Island where immigrants are examined before being admitted into the United States. This would indicate that they were steerage passengers for most cabin passengers are examined on shipboard. During the fiscal year ending June 30, 1923, 522,919 immigrants were admitted and 20,619 were debarred from entering and 3,611 aliens were deported. Until about 1890 nearly all immigrants came from Great Britain and Ireland, Germany and Scandinavian countries. That is to say, they came from the same parts of Europe as the original settlers. Therefore, they were easily assimilated and quickly became American citizens. After 1890 most of the immigrants came from southeastern Europe, where manners, customs, governments religions and standards of living were entirely different from ours. These peoples came in vast numbers and have not readily accepted American standards and principles of government. The present policy of the government is a selective one. The number to be admitted and the quota from different countries are now determined by Congressional action of 1924. This act also provides that examination to determine whether a candidate is. eligible to citizenship under American laws, shall be made over seas. The quota is based on the census of 1890 with the result that the greater number of immigrants will come from northern and western Europe instead of from southeastern Europe. In other words, the United States Government now decides who will be admitted and how many per year from any given country.
