Book
History of Masonry in North America from 1730 to 1800, together with a History of the Several Lodges F. & A.M. of Hudson County, N.J. Compiled by Henry Whittemore. NY: Autotype Printing and Publishing Co., 1888; facsimile reprint edition by Kessinger Publishing, no date, circa 2005. 4to paperback, pp. x, 297.
Names of Hoboken associated persons are in the name files. Due to copyright, only the indexes are images for reference purposes.
Three Hoboken lodges are present:
Hoboken Lodge No. 35, founded 1855.
Hudson Lodge, founded March 1865 (a German language lodge)
Euclid Lodge No. 136, organized in 1873 and warranted in 1874.
While the title suggests it only includes early history, it is mostly a history of 1800's organizations and people after an overview of the founding of Masonry. It includes basic information about the many area masonic lodges (unfortunately not the specific addresses) of the 19th century including "Biographical Sketches" of principal officers/members which are listed in the table of contents (called index in this work.) The biographies often include some detail including birthdate and place, previous places of residence, business or occupation, marriage date, wife's maiden name, her previous residence, children's names, other memberships or honors, etc. The information was current with the date of original publication.
Three of Hoboken's Mayors have biographies: Herman Timken (1883-1886), Edwin J. Kerr (1886-1888) and August Grassmann (who would serve from 1888-1891.) Also of note is a biography for Hoboken educator David C. Rue for whom a school is still named in his honor.
