Description"Wanted" sign board from Bethlehem Steel Shipyard listing help wanted / open positions at Hoboken yard, no date, circa 1938-1982. Formerly mounted on the exterior of the Employment Office, Hudson Street side of the southeast corner of Hudson and Fourteenth Streets. Wood and metal with green paint, ca. 48" high x 22-1/2"" wide x 2-1/2" deep; flat wood, ca. 24" wide x 6" deep, pitched slightly down for shedding water. Twenty-four interchangeable painted wood sign panels for the various positions available slipped into slots from the right. The "Wanted" sign was fixed with slots below for eight of the interchangeable signs. The vertical metal angles on each side were apparently added later. The locking hasp on the right made the slot at the bottom unusable for a standard panel. Twenty four of the interchangeable panels are available. They are painted wood, 22" wide x 3-1/2" high x 1/2" thick, rounded ends. They are organized by style into two groups. Group 1: Six each; earlier years, ca. 1938 (year Bethlehem Steel took over the facility)-1960; large block painted lettering in English only, some professionally lettered, others not; some apparently repainted and re-lettered as needed. Some are lettered both sides. Usually have a hang hole drilled at each end for storage when not in use. Loftsman Sheet Metal Workers Laborers Shipfitters Drillers Pipefitters Group 2: Eighteen each; ca. 1960-1982 (when yard closed) which are same size as group 1 but no hang holes; stenciled letters in yellow paint, one side only with position listed in two lines, English name above Spanish name.
