Photograph
Black-and-white photographs, eighteen, of R. Neumann & Co. leather manufacturing operations, 300 Observer Highway, Hoboken. No date, circa 1940s or early 1950s.
8" x 10" double-weight matte prints. Photographer not indicated. Numbered on back with black china marker from 2 to 19. Photo 1 is not present. Full size of sequence unknown. No other markings.
Prints are from Neumann files courtesy of the Bernheim Family. People seen in photographs are not identified.
Equipment and machinery in tannery finishing and other operations in producing leather hides. Documentation images of industrial processing/processes.
Photo image quality suggests a non-professional photographer with prints made from a small negative size. Purpose for creation of this group of photos is unknown, but Neumann did trade shows and an employee newsletter began in 1947 which did use some photographs (the few seen were posed photos whereas the images here appear candid in style.) Participation by Neumann in presentations at the local YMCA, schools, Chamber of Commerce (or similar organizations) may have been among the reasons they were assembled.
