Photograph
Sepia-tone photo of the "Leviathan" docked at the Hoboken piers, Hoboken, September 20, 1920. 11" x 14" print plus the printed caption formerly tipped-on the front bottom. Photographers: Underwood & Underwood.
Caption: (headline) No Bidder for Leviathan Rusting at Dock; (text) The world's second largest steamship, formerly the German line "Vaterland," which carried more American troops than any other vessel, is seen sunk in the mud at her Hoboken dock. Misguided newpaper clamor blocked her sale for $3,500,000. It would cost $8,000,000 to fit her for passenger service, and no purchaser can be found by the U.S. Shipping Board.
The liner was confiscated from the Hamburg-America Line. Due to scanning limitations, the full width image is a composite of the left and right images.
