Photograph
Cabinet photograph of the partially constructed steel hull of the ferry "Netherlands" for Hoboken Ferry Co. in yard at T.S. Marvel & Co., Newburgh, N.Y., September 30, 1892.
4-1/4" x 6-1/2" wide mount. Photographer not indicated. Ink notation on front. Reverse blank.
Front: Hoboken Ferry Co's New Boat. Sept. 30th 1892.
Apparently a documentation photo mounted on a typical cabinet photograph mount. Primary hull construction was nearing completion but not finished (see a detail from the center where light can be seen through holes in the plates for rivets not yet done); the main deck and superstructure have yet to be built.
====
Location of scene is as stated by seller. Date corresponds to the ferry "Netherlands" which the yard built in 1892 (and went into service in 1893.) The yard had previously built two ferries in 1891 (Bremen and Hamburg) for Hoboken Ferry Co. The "Netherlands" was the last one Marvel built for them. See notes.
