Photograph
Black-and-white photo of a railroad bridge with painted bank sign at Jersey & Hoboken Aves., Jersey City, N.J., no date (ca. 1968-72). Photo was probably taken by William Tremper. 8-5/16" high x 12-5/16" wide image on 11" x 14" paper. Reverse has holographic pencil notation; see image.
The view is looking north on Jersey Ave. (Hoboken Ave. is under the bridge itself; it becomes Newark St. leading to Observer Highway. The street at the right is 18th St. in Jersey City.) The bridge leads out of the Hoboken Erie Lackawanna Train Terminal (now NJ Transit)) going to the Bergen Tunnels. It is just a few hundred feet outside the city limits, but it is a common landmark for Hoboken residents. Note the directional sign at the right before the bridge: Hoboken P.A. Marine Terminal. The painted sign on the bridge for the Hudson Trust Company notes two locations for it including the one at 14th and Washington Sts. being the only drive-in bank in Hoboken. (In 2002, this building was effectively demolished. It was replaced with an adminstrative building for The Applied Companies. While the footprint was retained, nothing else was saved.) At the left handmade signs for fruit sellers are attached to a telephone pole.
The provenance of this image is not settled, but it is believed to have been produced for a Hoboken governmental publication that was cancelled.
